ARTBRUT (could be translated with “raw art”) - this is what some people call the work of artists who have not gone through any kind of classical schooling. Maybe “Outsider Art” would be more accurate. Because one thing, that most “art Brut”-Artists have in common is that most of them have rarely been known by the art-world in their live-times.
A beautiful example for an outsider building a whole world for anyone to see was the Postman Ferdinand Cheval. On his daily walks distributing the mail, he started collecting stuff, took it home and built … a palace … no joke!
His Palace “the Palais idéal de Facteur Cheval” took 33 years until it was finished in 1912. Only short before his death, people from outside the little town Hauterives started to know his work.
If you ever get the chance to go see this beautiful creation of Ferdinand Cheval, here are the directions:
Ferdinand Cheval, 26390 Hauterives, Drôme, Rhône-Alpes, France
